X-Ray Safety
Research Safety
New X-Ray Unit Registration
Principal Investigators must register all X-ray units and laboratories by submitting the A-1 and A-1S forms to Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). Forms are available on the EHS website.
All X-ray equipment and laboratories must be properly labeled by EHS and display appropriate signage.
Before using any X-ray equipment, users are required to:
- Complete the applicable online safety training and quiz through Purdue’s HSI learning platform
- Submit an A-4 form to EHS Radiation Safety
Only authorized users with an approved A-4 form are permitted to operate X-ray equipment.
Depending on the type and use of the X-ray unit, EHS may assign personnel dosimetry. EHS also conducts annual inspections of all X-ray units.
ALARA Principles
To minimize radiation exposure, follow ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable):
- Time – Limit the amount of time exposed
- Distance – Maximize distance from the source
- Shielding – Use appropriate protective barriers
