X-ray Machine Overview
X-ray radiation units at Purdue University fall into two categories analytical and diagnostic. Both types emit ionizing radiation when in operation so their use is strictly regulated in accordance with the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) and Purdue’s Radiation Safety Office.
To ensure compliance, all X-ray users must complete the required X-Ray Safety Training and submit the Form A-4: Radioactive Materials and Radiation Producing Use Application to the Radiation Safety Office before receiving approval to operate these systems.
Analytical X-ray Machines
Analytical X-ray machines are used for material analysis rather than imaging living beings.
Examples include:
- Cabinet X-ray units
- X-ray fluorescence (XRF)
- X-ray diffraction (XRD) machines
- Enclosed CT scanners
Diagnostic X-ray Machines
Diagnostic X-ray machines are designed for healthcare use.
Examples include:
- Fluoroscopy units
- Dental X-ray machines
- Standard radiography (X-ray) machines
- CT scanners used for imaging people and animals
