Waste Collection
Hazardous Materials
Science With Compliance
Purdue is an R1 research institution with over 1000 labs on campus. The Hazardous Materials Management (HMM) unit supports the university in facilitating safe and compliant research activities.
A primary focus for HMM is collecting and disposing of waste.
Waste Collection and Disposal
- Waste regulations apply to all labs
- All waste must be collected
- Including salts, sugars and buffers.
- An EHS Hazardous Materials Chemist will determine disposal methods to ensure regulatory compliance.
Chemical Waste
- Expired or unusable chemicals, trade products, process waste or lab debris.
- Chemicals that came into contact with lab debris, needles, silica gel, etc., need to be listed in waste pickup requests, even if they appear to be evaporated or dry.
Biological Waste
- Always provide full descriptions of the waste materials and contaminants.
- List the specific biological contaminants (specific bacteria or virus, tissue type, cell types, etc.).
- Waste with biological and chemical contaminants are considered chemical waste.
