What to Know and How to Prepare

Most construction projects include scheduled utility shutdowns that may temporarily affect offices, labs or other campus spaces. These shutdowns can involve electrical, plumbing or HVAC systems, so planning ahead is important.

What to Expect

• Utility shutdowns are scheduled weeks in advance and coordinated by Purdue and outside contractors.
• Building deputies will send an email with the shutdown date, time and impacted systems.
• Shutdowns typically occur on weekends to minimize disruption.
• During a shutdown, occupants should follow the notice and avoid entering the building

How to Prepare

• Put contingencies in place for critical equipment such as computers, lab instruments and ultra-low temperature freezers.
• Protect sensitive equipment from damage during power loss and restoration.
• Plan ahead for water outages affecting sinks, restrooms and drinking fountains.

After the Shutdown

• Operations and Maintenance and EHS will verify that water service is clean and potable before normal use resumes. Potential Delays
• Access should resume only after the shutdown notice indicates work is complete.

Potential Delays

• Occasionally, unforeseen issues, such as faulty shutoff valves, may extend the shutdown.
• Purdue works to keep outages as short as possible and appreciates your patience when additional time is needed.
