Resources and Guidance for Supporting Mental Health and Well-Being at Purdue
Mental health is an important part of overall well-being, and mental health challenges are common. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly one in five U.S. adults lives with a mental illness, yet many people do not receive treatment.
Mental illness refers to conditions that can affect a person’s thinking, emotions, behavior or mood. Recognizing changes in ourselves and others and knowing where to turn for support can help create a healthier and more supportive workplace.
When someone may be experiencing a mental health crisis
A mental health crisis can look different from person to person. Someone may appear extremely distressed, confused, agitated or unable to cope with a situation. If you believe someone is at immediate risk of harming themselves or others, call 911.
If a mental health crisis occurs involving a Purdue faculty or staff member:
During EAP hours:
Contact the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) at 800-451-1834, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m.
After EAP hours:
Contact Purdue Police by calling 911 for immediate assistance.
At any time:
The Purdue Crisis Center (CAPS) can be reached at 765-494-6995.
If you encounter a potentially dangerous situation
Your safety comes first. Remember these steps:
- Do not attempt to manage a situation that feels unsafe. Move to a safe location and call 911.
- Clearly explain the situation to the dispatcher. Provide your name, location and information about what is happening.
- Follow the directions of emergency responders. Provide additional information as requested and allow trained professionals to manage the situation.
Support is available
