Limit the Amount of Waste Stored in Your Lab
Waste Storage Compliance
Purdue’s waste handling permit limits the amount of waste that can be stored in a lab.
Volume Limits
To maintain compliance and ensure efficient handling, please submit a waste pickup request to EHS before your waste exceeds any of the following:
- 30 gallons of liquid waste
- 2 large containers of contaminated debris or silica gel
- 1 box of contaminated broken glass
Requesting Waste Pickups
Submit pickup requests using the online portal, EHSA.
Safe Practices
In addition to limiting the amount of waste stored in the lab, please keep the following items in mind to ensure safe handling for you and the EHS technicians.
- Store 20 L (5 gallon) carboys on the floor, never in a hood.
- Keep aisles and doorways clear of trip hazards.
- Submit pickup requests as often as needed.
- Keep solid waste collection containers under 40 lbs (bags, buckets and boxes.)
- Ensure broken glass boxes are lined with a heavy duty bag and that the top and bottom of the box is securely taped.
