Safety Reminders for Navigating Campus During Crane Lift Operations

Crane lifts are an important part of many construction, maintenance and equipment projects across campus. From installing large equipment to moving materials, these operations require careful planning and coordination to keep workers and the campus community safe.

Because crane operations can temporarily change normal access around a building or work area, employees and visitors should remain alert and follow all safety directions when a lift is taking place.

What to expect

Depending on the location and scope of a crane lift, temporary changes may include:

• Building evacuations
• Sidewalk or walkway closures
• Traffic restrictions or detours
• Barricades and restricted areas
• Changes to building or site access

When possible, advance notifications will be provided when a crane lift may affect an occupied building or nearby campus areas. Take a moment to review notifications and plan for any temporary changes to your normal route.

Safety reminders

When you encounter an active crane operation:

• Follow posted signs and instructions. Pay attention to evacuation directions, flaggers and temporary route changes.
• Stay outside restricted areas. Never cross barricades or enter a designated crane lift zone.
• Keep your distance. Do not walk or stand beneath suspended loads or lifting equipment.
• Stay alert. Put away distractions and remain aware of your surroundings when walking near construction or lifting operations.
• Use designated routes. Follow detours and temporary walkways until normal access is restored.

Safety is a shared responsibility

Crane lifts are carefully planned to minimize risks, but conditions can change quickly while work is underway. Following temporary restrictions and staying alert helps protect you, equipment operators and others working in or around the area.
