Tips to help prevent stairway injuries
Every year, thousands of people are injured in stair-related falls. Many of these incidents can be prevented by following a few simple safety practices and staying alert to potential hazards.
Stair Safety Tips
- Avoid distractions, including phones or multitasking.
- Always use handrails.
- Take one step at a time and avoid rushing.
- Keep stairs and stairwells clear of spills, debris and clutter.
- Wear shoes with good traction to help prevent slips, trips and falls.
- Avoid carrying items that block your view of the stairs.
- Use an elevator when transporting large or bulky items, when possible
What to Look For – When using stairways, be aware of the following conditions:
- Stairs and stairwells are in good condition.
- Steps are uniform in height and shape.
- Stair edges are visible and well maintained.
- Walkways are free of clutter or objects.
- Lighting is adequate throughout the stairwell.
- Proper handrails and guardrails are installed.
- Single steps or elevated surfaces are clearly marked and noticeable.
Taking a few extra moments to use stairs safely can help prevent serious injuries and create a safer environment for everyone on campus.
