Protect Yourself from Silica Dust
Silica dust is created when materials such as concrete, brick, stone and mortar are cut, drilled, ground or crushed. Breathing in this fine dust can cause serious, permanent health problems.
Health Risks
- Silicosis (an incurable lung disease)
- Lung cancer
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Kidney disease
How to Stay Safe
- Use water or dust collection systems to reduce airborne dust.
- Wear a properly fitted NIOSH-approved respirator when required.
- Never use compressed air to clean dusty surfaces unless specifically permitted with proper controls.
- Keep work areas clean using HEPA-filter vacuums or wet cleaning methods.
- Follow your company’s silica exposure control plan and attend required safety training.
