Shut the Sash
Research Safety
Improving Safety and Conserving Energy
Always Shut the Sash when not actively working at hood.
Be Safe
- The sash is an important safety barrier to protect lab occupants.
- The sash should only be opened to set up or modify an experiment or when directly handling substances. • Keep the sash to the lowest level necessary to perform the experiment. • Always close it fully when not in use.
- When shut, air flows through the hood to remove any fumes.
Save Energy
- Heating and cooling labs require significant amounts of energy, all conditioned air is exhausted outside through the fume hood and cannot be recirculated.
- Conditioning the air and running large fans for ventilation consumes a lot of energy.
- The fan speed and volume of air being moved can decrease when the sash is closed, which results in significant energy savings.
