Preventing Injuries at Work
Over the past three years, shoulder injuries have accounted for a significant number of workplace incidents, with many resulting in employees being unable to perform their regular job duties. These injuries are often linked to repetitive motions, sustained postures and improper lifting techniques.
Because the shoulder is involved in nearly every movement of the arms, neck and back, even minor discomfort can quickly impact daily activities. Reporting pain early and practicing safe work habits can help prevent more serious injuries.
Tips to Reduce Shoulder Strain
- Warm up before physically demanding tasks and stretch within a pain-free range of motion.
- Contact the ATI Worksite Solutions Early Intervention team with questions about stretching or discomfort.
- Avoid reaching overhead for heavy items.
- Use a stable platform or step stool when needed.
- Use carts and hand trucks to move materials whenever possible.
- Push loads rather than pull them. Pushing allows you to see where you’re going and engages stronger core muscles, while pulling places additional strain on the shoulders and back.
- Report shoulder pain or discomfort as soon as it develops.
Lift Safely
When lifting, face the object directly, keep your back as straight as possible and use your legs to provide lifting power. Following proper lifting techniques, taking breaks when needed and maintaining overall physical fitness can help reduce the risk of shoulder strains and sprains.
