Required Trainings for Lab Personnel
Effective training is the foundation of a safe laboratory. Supervisors must ensure all lab personnel complete required training before working with hazardous materials. Additional training may be required depending on research type and hazards.
Minimum Training for All Labs
- Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) Training
- Lab Safety Fundamentals (LSF)- Required for new lab employees and first-year graduate students (available through the Health and Safety Institute (HSI).- Annual Refresher
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- SOPs must be developed for hazardous tasks. Supervisors are responsible for training staff on lab-specific SOPs.
Additional Training (as applicable)
- Biosafety – Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI training) (Office of Research)
- Required before submitting a Purdue University Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) application.
- All personnel must complete refresher training each year.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Training- Supervisors must provide and document PPE training before lab work begins
The effects above depend on the frequency and wavelength of the emitted RF, the source power and the distance from the source. There are maximum permissible exposure limits to describe thresholds at which overexposure is dangerous to health.
Radiation Safety
- Laser Users – Class 3B/4 Laser Safety Training (HSI) and equipment SOPs.
- X-Ray Users – Analytical/Diagnostic X-Ray Safety Training (HSI, one-time) + A-4 Form.
- Radioactive Materials Users – Safety Training (HSI, every 2 years) + A-4 Form. Unsealed source users must also complete hands-on training with EHS Radiation.
