Inventory of Radioactive Materials and Devices
Maintaining an accurate and up-to-date inventory of radioactive materials and devices is essential for regulatory compliance, safe laboratory operations and the protection of personnel and the environment.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission requires all radioactive material users to complete an annual inventory verification. Accurate records help:
- Prevent misplaced or forgotten materials
- Reduce potential exposure risks
- Support timely and effective responses to audits or incidents
- Protect your research program and the Purdue community
Your Responsibilities:
All project directors and principal investigators who use radioactive materials must complete and submit an annual inventory. This process includes:
- Physically verifying each radioactive material or device
- Completing and signing the inventory form provided
- Returning the form to Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) within the assigned timeframe
The annual inventory process is also an opportunity to:
- Identify outdated, unwanted or degraded radioactive materials
- Reduce unnecessary inventory and storage
- Arrange for proper disposal with assistance from EHS through the standard EHSA submission process
