A Researcher’s Guide to New Radioactive and X-Ray Work on Campus
Radiation Work on Campus
All work involving radiation sources (material and devices) must be cleared by the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) before use. See Purdue’s Radiation Safety Manual for information. All forms must be filled with the following links: no hard copies can be accepted.
1. Submit Paperwork
Principle Investigator (PI):
- Complete the A-1
- Complete the A1-S
- Complete the A-4
- Complete relevant training (see Step 3 below) for certificate
- Put “NEW” under “Authorization Number”
2. Review and Approval
- Radiation Safety will review all forms
- Projects are routed for RSC review
- RSC meets quarterly
- Upon approval, an Authorization Number will be assigned
3. Complete Required Training
Complete the appropriate HSI training(s). You will need to create an account to get access. Search for the following under My Training>View Catalog:
- Analytical X-ray
- Diagnostic X-ray
- Sealed Sources
- Unsealed Sources **Schedule required in-person training
4. Submit Personnel Forms
PIs and all radiation users:
- Complete the A-4
- You will need your HSI certificate:
- My Training>My Transcript>View Diploma (on “EXAM” course type)
- The PI will put the assigned Authorization Number
- Dosimetry will be issued as required
Work may begin once approvals, trainings, and A-4 forms are complete. If you have any questions, the Radiation Safety Team is always happy to help!
