What to Know When Encountering a MEWP
Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs) are used to access elevated work areas where scaffolding is not practical. These lifts can range from 35 feet to more than 200 feet high and are commonly used for both large construction projects and routine maintenance or repairs. Because they are frequently in use across campus, it’s important to know how to stay safe when you encounter one.
Limited Visibility
- The operator controls the lift from the elevated basket.
- Because the basket is positioned behind the main body of the lift, the operator may not have a clear view of the path of travel.-Ground spotters assist in guiding the lift safely.
- If you see or hear a lift in motion, follow the directions of the ground spotter or avoid the area until the lift has stopped moving.
Potential for Falling Objects
- Work areas beneath lifts are blocked off to protect pedestrians.
- Never enter barricaded areas.-Although tools are tethered to the basket, there is still a risk of falling objects that could cause serious injury.
- Respect all cones, tape and signage around lift operations.
Worker Safety
- Lift operators are required to wear a harness and tether to prevent falls.
- This is an OSHA requirement and must be followed at all times.
