Hazardous Waste Disposal Tag Requirements
Identifying a Waste Container & Contents
From the moment the first drop of waste is added to a container, it must be labeled correctly to meet regulatory requirements and ensure safe handling. Using the orange Hazardous Waste Disposal Tag provided by Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) satisfies these requirements.
To properly label waste, make sure to:
- Clearly mark the container with the words “Hazardous Waste.”
- Provide a complete list of chemical constituents using full chemical names (no formulas, abbreviations or acronyms).
- Include the percentage of each chemical- if it’s less than 1%, it may be listed as “trace.”
- For debris or silica gel, list all chemicals the material contacted, even if it appears dry, as “trace.”
- Check all applicable hazard boxes on the tag. Ensure the information on the disposal tag matches the EHSA waste pickup request.
- Note: Disposal tags are not required for unused products in their original manufacturer containers.
