Proper Procedures for Decontamination
Emergency showers and eyewash stations serve the same purpose- to help workers quickly flush away hazardous substances, including corrosive chemicals, acids and airborne contaminants like dust that can cause injury.
Safety Shower Procedures: If exposure occurs, act immediately. Go to the nearest safety shower without delay.
- Remove all contaminated clothing and jewelry before stepping under the shower.
- Remain under the running water for at least 15 minutes to ensure complete decontamination.
- After flushing for the full 15 minutes, seek medical attention right away.
Eyewash procedures: If a hazardous substance enters your eyes, go to the nearest eyewash station immediately.
- Push the activation lever. This will open the dust covers and start the flow of water from both nozzles.
- Use your fingers to hold your eyelids open and position your eyes directly in the water streams.
- Rinse continuously for at least 15 minutes, do not stop early.
- After flushing for the full 15 minutes, seek medical attention right away.
