Emergency Construction
Construction Safety, Abatement and Remediation
What to do When Things Change Overnight
While most campus construction projects are planned in advance, some situations require immediate repairs. In these cases, sidewalks or roads may be closed quickly while crews respond. If you encounter emergency construction, keep the following in mind:
Heavy equipment
- Emergency repairs often involve large equipment such as excavation machinery.
- Safety fencing may not be installed right away while crews assess the issue.
- Avoid the area and walk a safe distance away.
Work zone boundaries
- Crews may set up caution or danger tape to mark the work area.
- Do not cross under or through taped areas.
- Use an alternate route or nearby buildings if your path is blocked.
Potential falling hazards
- Work may sometimes occur on building exteriors.
- Choose a different route and give crews plenty of space.
Personal safety
- Noise, heavy equipment and excavation can make it difficult for workers to see or hear pedestrians.
- Avoid active work zones until proper barriers are in place
Emergency construction is uncommon, but it does happen. If you encounter active work, please avoid the area until crews have secured the site.
