Learn How to Navigate Slippery Surfaces
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, slips, trips and falls resulted in 885 workplace fatalities in 2023.
These incidents are often preventable: slips occur when there’s not enough traction between footwear and the floor, trips happen when a foot hits an unexpected obstacle or drop, and falls occur when balance is lost.
Things to consider:
- Are objects creating trip hazards in your work area?
- What steps can we take to prevent slips, trips and falls at our site?
Purdue now offers a powerful prevention tool, the EHS Slip Simulator, located in the Materials Management Distribution Center. Based on research by Dr. Thurman E. Lockhart and proven to reduce slip-related incidents by up to 70%, the simulator gives individuals realistic practice identifying hazards and using safe walking techniques on slick surfaces.
It’s an effective (and surprisingly fun) way to build awareness and reduce risk. To schedule training or learn more, contact EHS – Facility and Occupational Safety.
