Crane Lift Safety Awareness
Construction Safety, Abatement and Remidiation
Reducing risk in overhead lifting activities
Construction and maintenance projects across campus may occasionally require the use of cranes to remove, install or transport large equipment and materials. While crane lifts are carefully planned and coordinated, they can create temporary safety hazards for building occupants, pedestrians and nearby traffic.
Environmental Health and Safety encourages employees to remain alert and follow all posted safety instructions whenever crane operations are taking place on or near campus.
When a crane lift is scheduled near or on an occupied building, temporary building evacuations, sidewalk closures or traffic restrictions may be necessary to help protect the campus community. Advance notifications will be shared whenever possible so occupants can prepare for temporary disruptions.
Campus community members should remember the following safety tips during crane operations:
- Follow all evacuation instructions and posted signage.
- Never enter barricaded or restricted crane lift areas.
- Pay attention to flaggers, detour routes and temporary walkway changes.
- Stay aware of surroundings and avoid distractions when walking near construction zones.
- Do not walk or stand beneath suspended loads or lifting equipment.
Once crane work is complete, crews will clear the area and reopen impacted buildings, sidewalks and roadways as soon as it is safe to do so.
