Staying Safe During Construction Season
With summer construction season in full swing, you may experience changes to your usual routes- whether you’re walking or driving.
Active work zones may include:
- Detours
- Blocked sidewalks
- Temporary lane closures
- Construction equipment moving in and out
Large equipment like forklifts, dump trucks, excavators and mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs) are often used on-site. These machines have significant blind spots and can pose serious safety risks to pedestrians and cyclists.
For your safety:
- Avoid walking near or between active equipment whenever possible.
- Wait for equipment to fully pass before crossing near an active work zone.
- Follow instructions from ground crews or posted signage, and don’t assume the operator can see you. Use designated pedestrian paths or follow detours when provided.
