Chemical Hygiene Plan
Research Safety
Understanding OSHA’s Laboratory Standard
Laboratory safety is an integral part of laboratory research and is essential to ensure that Purdue University’s compliance with all applicable environmental, health and safety laws, regulations and requirements are met. To better manage and mitigate the risks associated with laboratory research, the Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) has been developed. Laboratory environments present unique hazards due to the use of hazardous chemicals, making safety a top priority for everyone involved.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) established a standard specifically for laboratories, known as the Laboratory Standard (29 CFR 1910.1450). At its core is the Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP), a key component in ensuring the safety of all laboratory personnel. The CHP is a written document that addresses safety practices for handling chemicals in laboratories. It includes:
- Standard operating procedures (SOP)
- Exposure control
- Emergency procedures
Key requirements under OSHA’s Lab Standard:
- Hazard identification
- Exposure limits
- Training
- Medical surveillance
Doing your part:
- Review your lab’s CHP and make sure you are familiar with the safety protocols specific to the chemicals you work with.
- Always wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as lab coats, gloves and goggles.
- Work inside fume hoods when handling volatile or harmful chemicals.
- Know the location of safety equipment, such as eyewash stations, showers and spill kits.
