Handling and Disposal of Aerosol Cans
An aerosol can is defined in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) as a non-refillable receptacle containing a gas compressed, liquefied or dissolved under pressure, the sole purpose of which is to expel a liquid, paste or powder and fitted with a self-closing release device allowing the contents to be ejected by the gas.
Aerosol cans are used for many products:
- Pesticides
- Paints, varnishes
- Adhesives
- Cleaners, de-greasers, lubricants
- Vegetable sprays, whipped cream
Aerosol Can Disposal
Aerosol cans are disposed of as hazardous waste and must be submitted to EHS for pickup. Pickup requests can be submitted through EHSA.
Handling and Packaging
- Keep the caps on the cans when not in use and when packing for disposal.
- Place cans upright in a box.
- Do not seal the box. EHS technicians will do a visual inspection of the cans at the time of pickup.
Submitting a Waste Pickup Request
- Enter the trade name of the product as the container contents description.
- The % of content will be 100%.
- Create an additional container for each product type.
