The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Laboratory Standard (Chemical Hygiene Plan) requires standard operating procedures (SOPs) to be developed and followed when laboratory work involves hazardous chemicals. Other regulatory programs may also require SOPs.
SOPs are written instructions that describe how to perform a specific operation and outline the associated hazards and the measures used to control them. SOPs are recommended for work involving chemical, biological, animal and radiological hazards, radiation-producing devices and other physical hazards. SOPs should be written by personnel who are most familiar with the work and its risks, and they must be approved by the laboratory supervisor.
