Grant Type Selection Guidance

Classifying the source of funds and assigning the correct grant-number range

1. Purpose

Use this guide to determine the grant type from the source of appropriations and sponsor category. The grant type controls the applicable grant-number range, grant type group, and public/nonpublic designation shown in the source file.

2. Governing classification principles

  • Classify the award based on appropriation source.
  • Do not set up an award using the administering entity.
  • Use an Assistance Listing Number (ALN), when available, to help identify the grant type and sponsor.
  • All State and Local Government funding is classified as ST, including when the prime funding is federal. ***This applies to funding from the State of Indiana. ***
  • When sponsor status cannot be verified, escalate before final setup.

4. Decision sequence

Decision sequence for selecting a grant type.
Step Decision
1 Identify the source of appropriations, not only the organization administering the award.
2 Determine whether the funding is State or Local Government. If yes, use ST, including when the prime is federal.
3 For direct or prime federal funding, select the agency-specific federal code; use FO for another federal agency.
4 For non-federal funding, select JT, IN, ND, PR, or OF based on the source definition.
5 Confirm the assigned grant-number range, group, and public/nonpublic designation.
6 Escalate before final setup if sponsor status cannot be verified.
