Industrial Contracting Models 1 to 4
Purdue University is a leader in offering flexible contracting terms for intellectual property in both traditional research and applied research agreements. We start with four models:
- Basic Research (Model 1)
- Expanding Technologies (Model 2)
- Work-for-Hire (Model 3)
- Testing (Model 4)

Purdue’s Principal Investigators lead the decisions for the applicable model and the appropriate contract terms, though of course the industry sponsor must also agree to the proposed terms. The Industrial Contracting Team and the Office of Technology Commercialization provide guidance to Principal Investigators in making these determinations.
