Effective July 1, 2017 CAPS will be the point of contact for all CAPS related charges applied to student accounts or billed through your insurance. Questions regarding CAPS charges and fees will be answered by our front office staff.

Acceptable forms of payment will be Debit or Charge cards for same day charges and payments, billing to your student account, and billing to insurance. No-show fees and Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) evaluations can be paid on the day of service with a Debit or Charge card, or those fees will be sent to the Bursar and applied to your student account, which you can pay at your convenience.

CAPS will facilitate insurance billing for charges related to psychiatry and psychological testing. Insurance information will be gathered at check-in if your service will be billed to insurance. If you have questions, please ask our front office staff.

Services provided at no charge

Initial Assessments

Students access our services for an initial consultation through our Initial Assessment appointments. Initial Assessments with an assessment specialist involves completion and/or updating of paperwork and a consultation to assess the student's situation, help the student define their presenting problem, and determine how CAPS may assist the student with their concerns. The specialist will gather information to assess urgency and risk and to facilitate the matching of services based on individual need. The specialist will discuss therapy options and resources available based on the issues discussed.

Crisis consultations

When life threatening situations or behavioral emergencies arise students are seen by CAPS on-call therapists. Crisis consultations are single encounters with a CAPS therapist and are not designed to take the place of on-going therapy with a therapist, or serve as an adjunct to therapy. There is no charge for the consultation resulting from a crisis situation.

Intake appointments

An intake appointment is a formal meeting you have with your therapist at CAPS. It is during this meeting that information is gathered to help the therapist understand the issues that you are experiencing, and to begin setting goals and direction for your work. There is no charge for your intake appointment.

Group therapy sessions

Group therapy provides an opportunity for students to interact with each other therapeutically to resolve personally relevant issues. Students can attend an unlimited number of group therapy sessions at no charge.

Individual and couples therapy sessions

CAPS approaches therapy using a time-limited therapy model. The number of sessions required for the therapy work that a particular student does is determined by the therapist and the student during their work together. Partners and spouses who are not students will be seen only as part of couples therapy sessions. There is not an option to pay for additional sessions beyond the maximum of 12 individual or couples therapy sessions per year.

Initial screening appointment for Psychological Testing

An initial consultation with a psychological testing specialist to gather information and discuss recommended treatment and testing options is provided at no charge.

Care management services

Care Management services are offered to students both directly (face-to-face care management appointments) and indirectly (resource and referral research). Care Management services are provided to any currently enrolled student at no charge.

Fees for Additional Services

Costs for services charged beyond what is indicated above vary based on service provided, insurance carrier, and other factors. Discussions of this nature take place between the client and therapist, should this become an issue. Some services such as Psychiatric Services, Psychological Testing, and Alcohol Evaluations carry additional fees.

Psychiatric Services

CAPS utilizes a combined treatment model whereby psychiatric and psychotherapy services are integrated, since medication is often most effective when combined with active engagement in psychotherapy. Routine referrals for an initial psychiatric evaluation typically occur during the course of established therapy work with a CAPS psychotherapist, although occasionally an expedited referral (based on specific criteria) may be made by a CAPS psychotherapist soon after initiation of services at CAPS. Referrals for psychiatric services can also be made by campus colleague psychotherapy providers. Effective August 7, 2017 initial psychiatric evaluation visits will carry a fee of $25.00. Follow-up medication management visits up to 30 minutes will carry a fee of $25.00. Follow-up medication management visits exceeding 30 minutes will carry a fee of $50.00. CAPS psychiatric providers are in-network with Purdue Student Resources Insurance.

Fee waiver applications are available for students determined to be in high financial need.

Psychological Testing

While there is no charge for Testing Screening appointments, Comprehensive Testing for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Learning Disorders (LD), and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) costs $500.00. Personality Testing costs $50.00. For additional information please visit our Psychological Testing page.

Contact your insurance company regarding coverage and pre-certification requirements. Talk with your provider about specifics regarding the insurance claim process.

Alcohol (AOD) Evaluations

Fees for Alcohol Evaluations are $130.00 per evaluation. AOD evaluations are typically not covered by insurance and fee waivers are not possible for AOD evaluations. For additional information please visit our Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Program page.
