CAPS Mission, Philosophy and Commitment

Mission Statement

Our mission is to help Purdue University students maximize the value of their life experiences. As we develop collaborative relationships in a safe and respectful environment, the unique value and dignity of each individual and group are held paramount. We accomplish our mission through a variety of professional services including individual, group and couples psychotherapy; psychological testing; psychopharmacology; crisis intervention; drug and alcohol programs; outreach and consultation; and the training of helping professionals.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) strives to enhance the psychological health and personal effectiveness of students, thus empowering you to maximize your personal adjustment and individual accomplishments. In providing services, the staff attends to remedial, developmental and situational concerns, recognizing that the interaction between the stress of the academic environment and your individual level of development can lead to problems that can be alleviated through therapy. CAPS works together with the university community to create an environment that assists students in understanding and responding to challenges and opportunities in a way that enhances their personal and academic development.

Purdue University states that it is an equal access and equal opportunity university.

CAPS has a strong commitment to meeting the needs of diverse people. CAPS is committed to helping students benefit from their college experience and achieve personal and academic success. Although CAPS works with students in crisis, our primary goal is to assist students with their concerns before they develop into more serious problems.

One way that students can do this is to talk to a therapist or psychologist in a supportive atmosphere to aid self-understanding and the resolution of personal issues.
