Information About Science Express

The College of Science at Purdue University, through its Chemistry, Life Sciences, Physics, and Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences departments, delivers research grade instruments to high schools throughout central Indiana.

This project provides an opportunity for young students, from all backgrounds, to have hands-on learning experiences with instruments used in research laboratories today. These experiences increase the students' and teachers' skills and understanding of modern scientific technology.

The equipment, mounted on rolling carts, is delivered directly into the classroom for use by the students. The Science Express program creates opportunities for teachers and students to learn the theory and practice associated with scientific instrumentation.

Teachers attend training a session during the summer, at which time they are trained on the instruments and develop experiments appropriate for the high school laboratories. Emphasis on real world applications helps to demystify the instruments and link experiments to student experiences. The use of a variety of instruments provides a wide range of laboratory experiments and allows teachers to customize their science curriculum to fit the needs of their students.

To become a part of the Science Express program you will need to contact Zach Grigsby. We will let you know if you are in our delivery area. The cost for the program is $300 per teacher per year with a maximum of $1000 per school. All teachers using our equipment are required to pay the dues. We will let you or your group know when the next available time to receive training is.

We provide one training opportunity in the summer. This training is at Purdue University. The new teacher training generally takes 3 days to complete.

When you contact us, we will email you a link to our online registration form. It will have you check boxes for all of the equipment you would like to be trained. You can see what equipment we offer, with pictures, by clicking on the Instrumentation tab on the right side of our webpage. Thank you for your interest and we hope to work with you in the near future.
