BYTES

College of Science Learning Community for First-Year Students
Are you passionate about using technology to solve real-world problems? Do you want to join a tight-knit group of fellow Boilermakers who share your curiosity and drive? The BYTES Learning Community is your launchpad.
BYTES (Building Your Technology Expertise in Science) is a residential learning community for first-year College of Science students with a strong interest in computing, analytics, and innovation. No matter your major—Computer Science, Data Science, or any tech-focused science field—BYTES brings together a community of peers and mentors ready to support your success.
What You’ll Experience
- Live and learn together. You’ll be housed with other BYTES students in the same residence hall, building a strong community right from the start.
- Dedicated coursework. You’ll take a first-year seminar (SCI 195) designed to build your academic toolkit, introduce research and career opportunities, and connect you with faculty and resources across campus.
- Faculty and staff support. Our team is here to help you navigate your first year—from finding your classes to finding your path. We offer personalized support and encouragement every step of the way.
- Social and professional events. From game nights and coffee chats to panel discussions and alumni networking, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to build friendships and grow your network.
Who Should Join?
BYTES is open to all incoming first-year students in the College of Science. It’s a great fit for students who want to be part of a collaborative, tech-forward, and supportive environment.
