Andrew Roccella Memorial Scholarship

Andrew Roccella and Corinne Schillings

Through the generosity of Dr. Edward J. and Mrs. Eileen M. Roccella and their relatives and friends, the Purdue University Office of Programs for Study Abroad has received an endowment to establish the Andrew Roccella Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship celebrates the life of the Roccellas' son, Andrew M. Roccella.

About Andrew Roccella

Andrew was a 1999 Purdue University honors graduate of the professional writing program and member of the lacrosse team. In 1998 he studied in Milan and Florence, Italy and traveled throughout Europe. While in Florence, Andrew met Corinne Schillings who was in the Italian Studies Program. Their friendship grew into deep love for one another. On March 6, 2004, the day Andrew was to propose marriage to Corinne, both tragically died when a storm overturned their water taxi in the Baltimore harbor.

About the Scholarship

To honor Andrew, the Roccella family and friends have provided this scholarship which supports deserving students who wish to learn from and contribute to other cultures, by living and studying abroad. The scholarship has already been awarded to students for study in Germany and France. In the future awards will be made to students who wish to study cultures and languages in other countries. Ed and Eileen Roccella recall, “Andrew’s study abroad experience enhanced his natural gift of embracing friends from diverse backgrounds, cultures and religions. He found beauty and strength in all of them. In his quiet, good-humored way, he worked to be sure that all were heard, no one felt left out, and no one was left behind. Everything he touched he made better and this scholarship fosters his spirit.”
