Purdue Science offers tutoring assistance in Indianapolis through the SMART Center

Purdue University students in Indianapolis will now have an added option for free drop-in tutoring via the College of Science. The Science and Mathematics Academic Resource and Tutoring (SMART) Center is a College of Science student support service that is facilitated by tutors comprised of departmental graduate teaching assistants and trained undergraduate tutors. The SMART Center will be available to provide drop-in tutoring support throughout the semester Sunday through Friday, including evenings.
The SMART Center is housed in the lower level of the Engineering Technology Building, room ET003. Students in Indianapolis are welcome and encouraged to come to the SMART Center for homework and guidance for Purdue’s College of Science math, statistics, physics, chemistry and computer science courses.
The SMART Center is led by Julie Lang, who comes to Purdue most recently from Lewis University where she served as a faculty member. She brings pedagogical expertise in math education to this role as well as a passion for student support. As the SMART Center Director, she is excited to make the SMART Center a thriving hub of student academic engagement, growth, and community-building.
“The SMART Center is open to all Purdue students studying in Indianapolis,” says Lang. “We share a location with the Purdue OWL writing lab, so we invite all Purdue students to utilize this productive space. The SMART Center has tutors available for 17 different math and science classes, but anyone who is looking for a good place to study or work on homework is welcome.”
The SMART Center is open 52 hours per week during the semester: Sundays noon to 5 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Fridays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students are encouraged to check the center's website for changes.
“We aim to provide a productive study area for any Purdue student who wants a functional study area where they can focus on their learning,” says Lang. “Many of the courses we support function as a critical part of students' study plans. We are here to provide academic support where students can get the help they need when they need it. You do not need an appointment to come to the SMART Center. Just swipe in at our kiosk, select that class you are looking to work on, and meet with tutors who will be wearing colored lanyards which corresponds to the subject for which they are tutors.”
