Frequently asked questions

Probation

I am now on probation. Why did this happen?

University Regulations – Academic Standards Policy (University Senate Document 13-11, April 21, 2014)

http://www.purdue.edu/studentregulations/regulations_procedures/scholdeficiency.html

You have been placed on academic probation because your Fall 2019 semester GPA and/or cumulative GPA have fallen below the 2.0 GPA minimum GPA requirements.

Probation is a WARNING that you must make significant changes in your way of studying and preparing for your courses. If you earn a 2.0 or higher semester and cumulative GPA at the end of the Spring 2020 semester you will return to good academic standing. If you again earn less than a 2.0 semester AND cumulative GPA at the end of the Spring 2020 semester, you will move to drop status and will not be able to return to Purdue for the Fall 2019 semester.

Probation status may not be appealed. Academic status is a University regulation; academic advisors cannot help if there is an error in your status or grades.

What do I need to do?

You will be contacted by your academic advisor to complete the Probation Intervention Process. This process will allow you and your advisor to review your fall semester and identify difficulties you experienced, which negatively affected your grades. This information will then be used to create a plan of action, which may include referrals to campus resources. Your advisor’s goal will be to assist you in returning to good academic standing. It is very important that you complete the probation intervention process and meet with your academic advisor within the first two weeks of the Spring, 2020 semester.

I think one of my grades is incorrect and that I should not be in probation status. What can I do to get my grade changed?

Students who believe they have received an incorrect grade may dispute their grade within 30 days of the start of the subsequent semester (excludes summer session). The deadline to appeal a grade for Fall 2019 is February 24, 2020.

Drop Status

If you are in Drop status you may not return to Purdue for the Spring, 2020 semester and should make alternate plans as soon as possible. Drop status may not be appealed.  Consult the Readmission Website for more information.

I have been dropped by the University. Why?

Under University regulations, a student on probation will move to drop status if their semester and cumulative GPA are below the 2.0 requirement. Students in drop status cannot return to the University unless they have successfully completed the readmission process. Readmission to Purdue University is not guaranteed and will be based on a student’s academic record at Purdue as well as coursework that must be completed at another institution during the drop period.

Can I appeal my drop status?

Drop status may not be appealed.

What will I need to do to apply for readmission?

A student must complete the readmission process. It is very important that a student thoroughly read the readmission website so they properly complete the process and meet the application deadline for the semester or term they would like the opportunity to return to Purdue.

What will be expected of me?

First Drop Status: a minimum one semester lay-out period is required. Students requesting readmission to the College of Science must complete 12 credit hours in one semester at another institution; take a minimum 6 credits of math and/or science coursework; earn a minimum B in each course.

Second Drop Status: a minimum 2-semester lay-out period is required; 12 credit hours in one semester; take a minimum 6 credits of math or science coursework; earn a minimum B in each course.

Important Note: Students are limited to two readmission approvals in the College of Science.  There is no appeal process to this policy. Exception: a student who is within 15 credits of completing their degree requirements will be considered for an additional readmission.

Can my advisor help me in deciding where to go and what classes to take while I’m in drop status?

No. Students are expected to complete the readmission process through their own efforts. Many students attend Ivy Tech and take courses, where possible, which are equivalent to Purdue courses. Special Note: courses are required during drop status to establish a student’s renewed ability to successfully complete Purdue coursework and not for the purpose of meeting degree requirements.

I think one or my grades is incorrect and that I should not be in drop status. What can I do to get my grade changed?

Students who believe they have received an incorrect grade may dispute their grade within 30 days of the start of the subsequent semester (excludes summer session). The deadline to appeal a grade for Fall 2019 is February 24, 2020   Faculty will not available until the first day of classes
