Interdisciplinary Graduate Program
At Purdue University, the Ecological Sciences and Engineering (ESE) Interdisciplinary Graduate Program prepares the next generation of environmental leaders, researchers, and practitioners to address the world’s most complex ecological and sustainability challenges. Through a highly collaborative and cross-disciplinary approach, ESE brings together faculty and students from diverse academic fields to develop innovative solutions for issues such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable resource management, and environmental stewardship.
ESE offers both Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) pathways, providing students with the knowledge, skills, and research experience needed to make meaningful contributions in academia, government, industry, nonprofit organizations, and environmental consulting. Students pursue their degrees through a partnering academic department while simultaneously benefiting from ESE’s interdisciplinary curriculum, faculty network, and research community.
The program hosts a flexible, student-centered curriculum, which is organized around five interdisciplinary theme areas. This structure allows students to customize their plan of study to align with their research interests, professional goals, and emerging environmental issues. By integrating perspectives from the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and policy disciplines, students gain a systems-level understanding of environmental problems and the tools needed to develop sustainable solutions.
Students are encouraged to connect with ESE-affiliated faculty early in the application process to explore research opportunities, identify potential advisors, and determine the academic department that best supports their interests.
“The ESE Interdisciplinary Program allows students to develop a multidisciplinary perspective through diverse coursework and in-depth conversations with peers in other departments. As a student in this program, I have been able to learn from the unique perspectives of my ESE colleagues and pursue interdisciplinary collaborations giving me the chance to deep dive into real-world problems and provide unique, realistic solutions.”
