Computer and Information Technology (CNIT)

Students interested in earning advanced credit for CNIT courses can do so by taking a test-out exam. Please review the following guidelines and course-specific details before scheduling.

General Guidelines

  • Eligibility:
    • CIT majors may receive credit from all CNIT test-out exams.
    • CIT minors may receive up to 6 credit hours from CNIT test-out exams that count toward their minor.
  • Passing Requirement: A minimum score of 70% is required to receive credit.
  • One Attempt Only: Students may only attempt each test-out exam once. Studnets who have previously received a grade in a course (inlcuding W, WF, etc.) may not receive credit from that course's test out exam. 
  • No Study Guides Provided: Study materials are not available through PTS.
  • Scheduling Note: Students must meet all prerequisite requirements before attempting certain exams. See below for course-specific details.

Available Exams

  • CNIT 10500
    • Duration: 2 hours
    • Eligibility: Open to CIT minors and non-majors only
  • CNIT 15501
    • Duration: 90 minutes
    • Exam Format: Includes a 10-point hand-graded component
  • CNIT 17600
    • Duration: 2 hours
  • CNIT 18000 & CNIT 18200
    • Exam Structure:
      • One 2-hour written portion
      • Two 2-hour lab portions
    • Requirement: Students must pass the written portion before taking the lab portions
  • CNIT 25501
    • Duration: 2 hours
    • Prerequisites: Credit or passing score in one of the following:
      • CNIT 10500
      • CNIT 15501
      • CS 15800, CS 15900, CS 17700, or CS 18000
  • CNIT 27200
    • Duration: 2 hours
    • Exam Format: Handwritten and hand-graded
    • Prerequisites: Credit or passing scores in all of the following:
      • One of: CNIT 10500, CNIT 15501, CS 15800, CS 15900, CS 17700, or CS 18000
      • And: CNIT 18000 or CNIT 182000

Registration

Online registration is required, and students are encouraged to use the Advanced Credit Checklist attached to Form 231 to ensure that they have completed all registration steps. Walk-ins are not allowed. Please check your eligibility before registering.

Exam Fee

Please ensure you are ready and able to attend your appointment time. The Advanced Credit fee of $35 is non-refundable, and your invoice number will be associated with your appointment. If you do not show, cancel or reschedule your appointment, you agree to forfeit the fee.
