What is pre-registration?  How is it different than the “usual” process of course registration?

The usual time ticket/classification-based registration process creates a first-come, first-served approach where students register for classes within an assigned time period based on space available and course pre-requisites and restrictions associated with each course.

Pre-registration allows for the submission of course registration preferences from students prior to the creation of individual student schedules. The pre-registration process is designed to fully optimize course schedules by better evaluating course space available and overall demand for space before creating student schedules. Simply put, the goal is to maximize the number of students being registered for as many of their first choice courses as possible. This process also allows for the opportunity to work with departments across campus to identify where additional capacity/space can be added before students are registered for their courses.

Why was this decision made?

As a response to the challenges presented from COVID-19 and the unique circumstances created by the pandemic, all West Lafayette degree seeking undergraduate students will register for spring 2021 courses using the pre-registration process.

The realities of our current challenges require us to make changes to some of our processes to adapt to the quickly changing environment. One of these is around course registration. The goal continues to be to maintain as equitable a process as possible when aligning demand for courses with availability of space. This decision is specific to spring semester 2021.

How will I register for the classes I need to take in spring?

Along with your advisor, you will complete your course request form (often referred to as the CRF). Your advisor will open your “time status window” which allows you to list the courses you wish to take. Where possible, we strongly encourage you to also list alternative courses to take in the event your first preferences are not available. This increases the likelihood of receiving a complete schedule based on your preferences. Information about how to fill out the Course Request Form can be found here along with a video tutorial here
