Registration holds

Before you can register for classes or make curriculum changes, your record needs to be clear of holds. Find out what holds are on your account, which office issued them and steps to resolve.

Understanding Registration Holds

A hold is a restriction placed on your student record that may limit access to certain academic services, including submitting a Course Request Form, registering for or changing classes, changing your curriculum or requesting official transcripts. Holds are placed by various Purdue offices for different reasons.

Common reasons for holds include unpaid library fines, parking tickets or residence hall bills; disciplinary action by the Office of the Dean of Students; failure to meet immunization requirements; missing emergency contact verification; or failure to confirm the location of an off‑campus course experience.

First Check for Holds

Before meeting with your advisor or attempting to register, you should make sure your record is clear of financial and registration holds.

Check your student profile in myPurdue for any holds that may affect your registration. Each hold will list the office that issued it, explain how it affects your record and provide guidance for resolution. If you have questions about a specific hold, contact the issuing office directly.

Standard Processing Holds

Some holds must be resolved each term in which you are registered for courses. If these holds aren’t released, you won’t be able to register or make curriculum changes.

  • The Financial Responsibility hold requires you to complete the required Financial Responsibility acknowledgment each term.
  • The Emergency Contact hold requires you to verify your emergency contact information each term. To release the Emergency Contact hold, locate your Emergency Contacts card in myPurdue, and review the listed contact for accuracy. If updates are needed, update the information on your Personal Information profile. Once the contact is confirmed, select Verify to release the hold.

You cannot register for classes until both the Financial Responsibility and Emergency Contact holds are released.
