Variable Title Courses
Variable title (VT) courses support curricular flexibility and innovation. They serve different purposes and are managed differently depending on their type.
- Each VT course number must always fulfill the same type of degree requirement (for example, free elective, major requirement or upper‑division credit). VT courses aren’t programmed into the degree audit at the section level.
- Permanent VT courses (multiple students), such as special topics or seminars, may vary by topic, but all sections with the same course number must meet the same degree requirement. Different requirements should use different VT numbers.
- Permanent VT courses (individual students), such as independent study or undergraduate research, are generally not programmed to fulfill specific degree requirements, though exceptions may be used as needed.
- Temporary VT courses are used to pilot new content under consideration for permanent status and don’t fulfill specific degree requirements. Departments are encouraged to maintain separate numbers for lower‑division, upper‑division, and graduate‑level courses.
