Eclipse glasses available for Administrative Operations employees; safety tips for viewing solar eclipse

Eclipse glasses will be available to all Administrative Operations employees, beginning the week of April 1. Glasses will be delivered to each department, and employees should work with their supervisors to obtain a pair of glasses.

The total solar eclipse will occur on April 8. The moon will completely cover the sun while passing between the Earth and sun. According to NASA, individuals should remember the following safety tips while viewing the total solar eclipse:

  • When viewing partial phases of the solar eclipse, which happens before and after totality, be sure to use solar viewing glasses. Regular sunglasses are not safe for viewing the sun.
  • Always inspect eclipse glasses before use. If they are torn, scratched or damaged, discard them.
  • Always supervise children viewing an eclipse.
  • Do not look at the sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer as the concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury.

Questions about safety may be directed to Mike Silanskis, director of occupational safety and facility safety, at msilansk@purdue.edu. Questions about obtaining a pair of glasses may be directed to Amanda Lade, administrative manager, at aelade@purdue.edu.
