Training Group:
Biomolecular Structure and Biophysics
Research Summary:
Emmanuel is a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate in the Biomolecular Structure and Biophysics training group within the PULSe Program. He conducts his research in the Mesecar Lab in the Department of Biochemistry, where he investigates Candida Guanosine Triphosphate Cyclohydrolase I (GCH1) as a potential target for drug development against fungal infections. His research involves various aspects, including the expression and purification of GCH1, kinetics, biophysical studies, and the use of Cryo-EM for structural characterization. This study would provide a better structural understanding of GCH1 to develop potential novel inhibitor compounds. He holds a bachelor's and master’s degrees in Biochemistry from Nigeria.
Why did you choose to attend PULSe:
Firstly, the PULSe program's interdisciplinary approach captivated my interest. Also, the program's vibrant diversity is equally thrilling, with the participation of over 200 faculty members spanning multiple departments. This diverse landscape would allow me to rotate across labs in different departments, sharing a common research focus. I am particularly fond of the abundant research resources and collaboration opportunities available. Overall, the support from the PULSe program helps navigate the demands of grad school.
