Biomolecular Structure and Biophysics

Secondary Training Groups:

Computational and Systems Biology

Research Areas:

In the Jiang Lab we use cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to study structures of protein amyloids involved in neurodegenerative diseases, macromolecular complexes involved in cancers, human viruses, and bacteriophages. The Jiang Lab also develops methods to improve cryo-EM sample preparation, data collection, image analysis, and 3D reconstruction.

Current Projects:

1. Cryo-EM structural studies of protein amyloids such as tau, prion, Abeta, etc. in neurodegenerative diseases 2. Cryo-EM structural studies of bacteriophages and human viruses including basic science and applications of viral capsids as drug delivery vehicles or vaccine display platforms 3. Development of cryo-EM sample preparation, data collection, image analysis/3D reconstruction methods

Importance of Interdisciplinary Research:

Our research projects are highly interdisciplinary, spanning biology, chemistry, physics, computing, machine learning, and more. Students will have the opportunity to work in an environment with diverse backgrounds and ideas, with the option to learn a wide range of skills or to specialize in one or a few areas while collaborating with colleagues.
