Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases
Secondary Training Groups:
Biotechnology, Computational and Systems Biology
Research Areas:
Human gut microbiome, dietary fiber, chronic disease, inflammation, polysaccharide degradation, metabolic interactions, microbial division of labor, gut-brain axis, gut-immune axis, microbial systems biology, biotechnological upcycling of agricultural residues
Current Projects:
1. Understanding division of labor in polysaccharide degradation 2. Measuring human gut microbiome compositional and functional resilience to fiber perturbation 3. Assessing whole grain food contributions to health 4. Identifying the ecological mechanisms that underlie competition for oligosaccharides 5. Discovery of novel gut microbial xenometabolites 6. Bioprocessing of wheat brans for phenolic biotransformation and animal gut health 7. Evaluating the role of mother's milk components in governing infant gut microbiome function
Importance of Interdisciplinary Research:
Our lab lies at the interface of four colleges at Purdue - and we work with collaborators in all of them. Our own work lies at the interface of experimental microbiology, computational biology, mathematical modeling, and microbial systems biology.
