Primary Training Group:
Biotechnology
Secondary Training Groups:
Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases
Research Areas:
The primary focus of my research group is the mechanistic investigation of nanomaterial-biological interactions and their influence on the applications of nanotechnology.
Current Projects:
Current research projects include 1) nanomaterial-biomolecule interactions in susceptible subpopulations existing with underlying disease states, 2) immune responses to metal and emerging two-dimensional nanomaterials, 3) cardiopulmonary and immune toxicity assessment of environmental and occupational nanomaterial exposures. Overall the goal of our research is to understand nanomaterial biological interactions and responses in order to maximize the potential benefits of nanotechnology while insuring that possible adverse health effects are avoided.
Importance of Interdisciplinary Research:
The Shannahan laboratory is actively engaged in addressing real-world issues which requires an interdisciplinary training environment and engaging with experts from across multiple disciplines..
