Computational and Systems Biology, Membrane Biology
Research Areas:
The Schaser Research Group uses advanced imaging tools and an alpha-synuclein fibril seeding approach to study protein aggregation in a mouse model of Parkinson’s disease (PD). The ultimate goal of the lab is to merge knowledge of clinical issues, animal behavior, and the cranial sensorimotor system to characterize and treat voice and swallowing deficits in PD.
Current Projects:
Current projects use an innovative transgenic mouse model and the fibril seeding approach to determine the effect of synuclein aggregation in discrete locations of the cranial sensorimotor system on voice and swallowing function.
Importance of Interdisciplinary Research:
In addition to research, the Schaser Research Group is also passionate about building supportive networks for people and their loved ones living with PD. Dr. Schaser is currently the Co-Director of the Parkinson's Disease Education and Support Group of Greater Lafayette and serves on the board of Lafayette Area Parkinson’s Support (LeAPS).
