Plant Biology

Research Summary:

I am a Ph.D. candidate in Plant Pathology at Purdue University, focusing on identifying and characterizing genes conferring resistance to anthracnose disease in Sorghum bicolor. My research integrates classical genetics, molecular biology, and next-generation sequencing to map resistance loci and functionally validate candidate genes, such as ARG7. I perform field and greenhouse phenotyping, pathogen inoculation, gene expression analysis, and genomic variant detection to uncover the molecular basis of resistance. My work supports the development of disease-resistant sorghum varieties, contributing to sustainable agriculture and global food security.

Why did you choose to attend PULSe:

I chose to join PULSe at Purdue University because of its strong interdisciplinary training, world-class faculty, and vibrant, collaborative research environment. The program’s integration of plant pathology, genomics, and molecular biology aligns perfectly with my passion for addressing global agricultural challenges. Purdue’s leadership in plant sciences and cutting-edge research in crop improvement and host-pathogen interactions directly supports my goal of developing sustainable solutions to plant disease. The opportunity to learn from diverse scientists, receive tailored mentorship, and contribute to impactful research makes PULSe the ideal community for both academic and professional growth.

About Me: (Hobbies and Interests when not in lab):

Outside the lab, I enjoy singing and leading worship at church, which allows me to recharge spiritually and stay connected to my community. I also play soccer, which helps me stay active and unwind from academic demands. In my quiet moments, I engage in journaling, hiking, and watching documentaries. These activities, along with quality time spent with my family, bring balance to my life and keep me grounded. Whether organizing a choir rehearsal or enjoying a peaceful walk, I value opportunities that enrich both my personal well-being and sense of purpose beyond research.
