Registration troubleshooting

Help your students troubleshoot registration errors, understand course restrictions and requisites, and submit override requests.

Shortcuts:
  • Registration Error Codes
  • Restrictions and Requisites
  • Course Overrides

Registration Error Codes

Use the table below to quickly diagnose registration errors and guide students to the appropriate resolution. For questions about department-specific overrides, reach out to the departmental designee or schedule deputy for the department offering the course.

Error Code What It MeansNext Steps
Maximum hours exceededThe student has exceeded the credit limit for the term. Fall and spring term undergraduate and graduate limit is 18.0 credits, and professional limit is 22.0 credits. Summer term limit is 9.0 credits and winter term limit is 3.0 credits. The winter limit is strictly capped and shouldn’t be overridden.Ask the student to contact you to discuss adjusting their schedule or requesting a credit limit override.
Closed sectionThe section has no remaining seats. If the department allows closed section overrides, the student can submit a request through the Scheduling Assistant. For more details, refer to the Course Overrides section below.
Department permissionThe course requires department permission to register. If you’ve advised the student to enroll, direct them to submit an override request through the Scheduling Assistant.
Instructor permissionThe course requires instructor permission to register. Direct the student to submit an override request through the Scheduling Assistant.
Preq and test scoreThe student hasn’t completed the required prerequisite or doesn’t meet the test score requirement. Review the prerequisite with the student. Course prerequisites are listed in the Course Catalog, accessible through myPurdue.
Time conflict The selected course conflicts with another course already on the student’s schedule. Help the student identify an alternate course reference number (CRN) or section that doesn’t conflict.

Restrictions and Requisites

Help students understand why they may be blocked from registering for a course due to restrictions or requisites.

Restrictions

Different types of restrictions limit enrollment to specific groups of students.

TypeDescription
College restriction Restricted to students in a specific college or colleges

Example: S = Science students only
Major restriction Restricted to students in a specific major or majors

Example: ACCT = Accounting majors only; ECON = Economics majors only
Class restriction Restricted to students in a specific classification

Example: freshman, sophomore
Level restriction Restricted to students at a specific level

Example: UG = undergraduate; GR = graduate; PR = professional
Program restriction Restricted to students in a specific program or programs

Example: MGMT-BS, AAE-BSE, HTM-BS

Requisites

Requisites define course completion requirements. To review requisites for a specific course, search the Course Catalog in myPurdue.

TypeDescription
Prerequisite The student must complete the prerequisite course with the minimum required grade before registering for the course.
Corequisite The student must be enrolled in both courses during the same term (for example, EDCI 20500 and EDCI 28500).
Concurrent prerequisite The student may be enrolled in the prerequisite course at the same time as the course in which they are registering, or may have completed it in a prior term.

Course Overrides

Overrides allow students to register for a course when a restriction, requisite or section limit would otherwise prevent it. For closed section overrides, the department must enable the course before a student can submit a request. Other override types don’t require departmental action.

Share the steps below with your student, when attempting a variable title override.

  • In myPurdue, navigate to the Registration tab and select Scheduling Assistant.
  • Select the term and enter a PIN, if prompted.
  • Click Variable Title Course button on bottom left under Class Schedule.
  • Choose Build My Schedule. If the section is full or restricted, proceed to the next step.
  • Enter the subject and course number in the course field. The system will display a list of approved courses for variable title.
  • Input your title, as agreed upon with your faculty (not exceeding 32 characters).
  • Select the credit hours pre-determined with the faculty of record prior to submitting.
  • Select the instructor of record as previously discussed with the faculty prior to submitting.
  • Choose your grade mode option. Confirm with your advisor that it meets degree requirements.
  • Add a Note if the start and end dates will need to be altered.
  • Select Request Course to submit.
  • Wait for department, advisor and instructor review. You’ll be notified of the decision. If approved, registration will be processed and you/your advisor notified.

Finding Courses with Space Available

If a student needs an alternative course, you can use the Batch Scheduling Dashboard to find sections with open seats. This is especially useful as the CRF deadline approaches.

  • In the Batch Scheduling Dashboard, confirm you’re in the correct term and role.
  • Leave the search filter empty. This search method works only in the Batch Dashboard, not the Online Dashboard.
  • Select the Enrollments tab and sort by Available to view sections with open seats.

Advisor Registration Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Students who believe they have already mastered the COM 11400 content may request a test-out exam through the Brian Lamb School of Communication. Direct students to contact the department directly for eligibility requirements and scheduling.

Yes. Students who successfully test out of COM 11400 earn credit toward the university core oral communication requirement.

Foreign language placement testing is available before the start of each semester. Direct students to the College of Liberal Arts advising office or their department for testing dates and instructions.

When searching for courses in the Course Request Form, the instructional delivery mode is listed next to each section. Sections labeled Sync Online or Hybrid indicate online or blended delivery. Students can hover over the section or select Notes for additional details.

Variable title courses allow students to choose a specific topic within a course number. Variable credit courses allow students to select the number of credit hours, and both options are available in the Course Request Form. Advise your student to select the section that matches their topic or credit preference before submitting.

Letters after a course number indicate a specific section type or delivery format. Common examples include ‘D’ or ‘DIST’ for distance, ‘H’ for honors, and ‘E’ for evening. Direct students to the Course Catalog in myPurdue for details on a specific section.

Students can add up to five substitute courses per priority line in the Course Request Form using the Substitute Course Request rows below each priority line. Advise students to add alternates for every priority course — substitutes help the scheduling algorithm find the best possible schedule if a top choice is unavailable.
