Understanding Registration at Purdue

For undergraduate students registering for fall and spring, registration typically happens in two phases: pre-registration and open registration. Not every student will participate in both phases, but understanding how they work will help you know what actions to take and when.

During pre-registration, you submit a Course Request Form instead of adding classes directly. We use these requests — along with any course alternatives you provide — to build schedules in a batch process, which are then released for you to review.

After schedules are released, open registration begins. During this phase, you can add, drop or change courses in real time using Scheduling Assistant, as long as seats are available and no registration holds apply.

Graduate and Professional Students

For graduate, professional and other student populations, begin the registration process by selecting your term in the Registration Dates and Time Ticket Windows section below to access key registration dates and deadlines specific to your student type.

Start by selecting a time ticket window

Before You Register

Registration is the process of selecting courses, reserving space in those courses, receiving your class schedule and paying required fees. You’re not officially enrolled until your fees are paid.

Before your registration window opens, complete the steps below in order to avoid delays.

A hold is a restriction placed on your student record that may limit access to certain academic services, including submitting a Course Request Form, registering for or changing classes, changing your degree path or requesting official transcripts. Holds are placed by various Purdue offices for different reasons.

Resolving holds before you meet with your advisor ensures you’re ready to act as soon as your registration window opens.

Check your student profile in myPurdue for any holds that may affect your registration.

Learn about holds and how to resolve them

Registration begins with a meeting with your academic advisor or major professor. Your advisor will help you plan courses that align with your degree requirements and educational goals, and will provide your registration PIN if one is required.

If you’re unsure who your advisor is, visit the Navigating Academics card in myPurdue or contact your college, school or department.

Some students will also learn when they can begin registering during this meeting. Undergraduate, Doctor of Pharmacy and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students should rely on guidance from their advisor along with their individual registration time ticket in myPurdue.

About Registration Personal Identification Numbers (PINs): Registration PINs are sometimes required for graduate students and non-degree-seeking undergraduate students. If you’re asked for a registration PIN, consult your advisor.

Your registration time ticket shows when you are allowed to begin registering for classes. To find your time ticket in myPurdue, follow the steps below:

  • Select Academics from the top menu to display only academic-related cards.
  • On the Academic Profile card, select Student Profile.
  • In the new tab that opens, select your term from the top left under your name.
  • On the right-hand side select Registration Notices to display your time ticket. The first date and time listed is the earliest you can register.

You may register and make schedule changes throughout your assigned registration window. If a hold is preventing registration, it will appear to the right of your time ticket information. Open it for information on the services impacted.

Refer to the Registration Dates and Time Ticket Windows for the latest schedules listed by term.

Understanding Registration Time Ticket Groups

Registration dates vary by term and student population. All published dates and times reflect when the first registration window opens. Time tickets are released gradually to ensure system performance, and assignment is based on completed and earned credits in myPurdue.

Dates and times are subject to change. Always rely on your individual time ticket in myPurdue for the most accurate information.

How Registration Timing Works
  • Credit hours completed and earned in myPurdue determine priority
  • Registration opens in phases by student population
  • Time tickets are not released all at once
  • Your time ticket determines when you can take action

Pre-registration: Submit Your Course Request Form

Before your registration window opens, you’ll submit a Course Request Form to request courses for the upcoming semester. Review the steps below to understand the pre-registration process.

For additional help, review our frequently asked questions.

How to Submit Your Course Request Form

Use the Course Request Form to request courses for an upcoming semester. The form closes on a published date each term for administrative processing. When processing is complete, you’ll receive an email letting you know your schedule is ready to view.

Once opened, your Student Course Requests will be displayed. You may see courses already listed based on advisor recommendations.

In myPurdue, select Registration from the top menu, and locate the Register for Classes card and choose Course Request Form (CRF).

Visit mypurdue

Review Courses Recommended by Your Advisor

If your advisor has already entered course recommendations, review them carefully before proceeding. If no courses appear, you’ll need to manually enter courses into the blank form.

Only request courses you’ve discussed with your academic advisor. Changing advisor-recommended courses may affect your ability to register for required courses and could impact your overall schedule and degree progression.

If you’re part of a Learning Community, some courses may appear as locked and cannot be changed.

Enter Course Alternatives

For each requested course, you can enter one or more alternatives. Providing alternatives gives the system more flexibility when building your schedule and improves your chances of receiving a complete schedule. Some required courses may not have alternatives.

Enter an alternative course on the indented line that appears underneath the primary course request once you select the course. If your advisor recommended a specific alternative, enter it there. If no alternative is available, move to the next priority line. You may add multiple alternatives for the same course if needed.by clicking the plus (+) icon to the right of the alternative text box.

Submit Your Requests

When your Course Request Form is complete, submit your request.

If no issues are found, a message will display confirming your requests were successfully submitted.

When submitting, you may see messages that require attention.

Review Messages After Submission

If a warning displays that no alternatives were entered, review the message but if this matches what you and your advisor discussed, you may continue and submit.

If there’s a request for overrides, this means one or more courses require approval. If the course was discussed with your advisor, you may submit the override request and it’s suggested to add any comments related to the request. If you don’t meet a prerequisite, the request will be denied.

After submission, course requests may show one of the following statuses:

  • Denied and requiring advisor follow‑up with a red X
  • Pending review, with no action needed from you with a blue clock
  • Submitted successfully with a green checkmark

What should I do before completing my course request form?

Take these steps before you submit:

  • Meet with your academic advisor. Together you will set the priority order for your courses, choose alternate courses and confirm any overrides you need to request.
  • Clear any holds on your account.
  • If you have a disability, meet with the Disability Resource Center to make sure your accommodations are in place.

What will I see if the pre-registration window is not open?

A warning box will appear that says “You are not allowed to make any changes at the moment. Please contact your advisor if you need to make a change.”

How do I check my course request?

Visit myPurdue and find the Register for Classes card. Select the Scheduling Assistant link to view the status of your course selections.

How do I find the prerequisites for a course?

Select the magnifying glass icon to search for the course. Scroll to the Details tab to see the prerequisites.

What do the letters after a course number mean?

Select the magnifying glass icon to view notes about that course offering. The notes explain what the letters mean.

How do I add more alternate courses?

Select the plus sign on the right side of the course entry to add another alternate line.

How many substitute courses can I add?

You can add substitute courses at the bottom of the course request page. A substitute can take the place of any course listed above it. Keep in mind that each substitute raises your maximum credit total, which may require an override.

Why am I getting an error that I have fewer than 15 credit hours?

Students are expected to register for at least 15 credits each semester to stay on track to finish a bachelor’s degree in four years. You can save your request with fewer than 15 credit hours if your advisor has approved it.

Will I get an error if I request two classes offered at the same time?

Not always. If you see a message, you can ignore it and keep both courses on your request form. You will only be registered for one of them.

How do I request an online course?

The scheduling process places you in on-campus sections first. If you prefer an online section, search for the course with the magnifying glass icon and check the online box if one is available.

How do I add a variable title or variable credit course?

Add these courses during open registration instead of pre-registration. Work with your advisor to make sure you stay under the credit hour limit.

What is a free time request and how do I enter one?

A free time request blocks out parts of the day when you cannot attend class, such as for work, childcare or a disability.

To enter one, select the magnifying glass icon and choose the Free Time tab. Select each half hour square you need free, then choose the Select button or press enter to add it to your course requests.

Use free time requests carefully. A free time request placed at a high priority can block a lower priority course that meets during that time. That may cost you a required course or a full schedule.

Do I need to select my learning community courses?

No. These courses appear first on your course request page, grayed out with a lock icon. You cannot change them. Send learning community questions to the Learning Community office.

What if I no longer want to be in my learning community?

Talk with your academic advisor first. Then contact Learning Communities at learningcommunities@purdue.edu or (765) 494-5785.

What if my dual credit or transfer credit has not loaded and I need an override?

Your advisor needs to see an official or unofficial copy of your transcript before they can approve an override. Once the override is in place, you can attempt to register for the course.

Can I add a note when I request an override?

Yes. Add your note, then select Request Overrides and Submit.

How will I know if my override request was approved or denied?

You will receive an email at your Purdue address when a decision is made. The email will direct you back to the course request page. A red X next to the course means the request was denied.

When can I test out of COM 11400?

Visit the COM 11400 page for dates and details.

Can I register for COM 11400 as a backup in case I do not pass the test out?

No. If you choose to test out, you cannot also add COM 11400 to your course request form. If you try to do both, the course request will be removed before your schedule is built.

Does the COM 11400 test out meet the University Core requirement for oral communication?

Yes. You will receive credit by exam for COM 11400, which meets the University Core requirement for oral communication.

When can I take a foreign language placement test?

Visit the Language Placement Testing page for dates and details.

When will I receive my schedule?

You will get an email when your schedule is final and ready to view.

What if I did not get a required high priority course?

The scheduling process tries to give you as many of your choices as possible. You cannot be registered for a course if:

  • The course is full. Ask your advisor whether you can join a waitlist.
  • The course time conflicts with another course on your schedule.
  • You do not meet the prerequisites or restrictions for the course.

What if my class times are not what I wanted?

Your schedule was built from your course request form, including your alternates, to give you the best workable schedule. Talk with your advisor before making changes to be sure a change keeps you on track.

What if my schedule includes two classes that overlap?

Some courses, such as BAND 11000, allow students to miss a set amount of class time. Talk with the instructor of the course.

What if I was assigned an online or hybrid course I do not want?

You can try to switch to a face-to-face section once your registration time ticket opens. You will need your registration PIN. Find your time ticket in myPurdue under the Register for Classes card.

When can I change my schedule?

Once your time ticket opens, you can change your schedule if your advisor recommends it. Read every dialog box carefully before you click. It is easy to accidentally drop some or all of your classes.

Can I rearrange my schedule on my own?

You can try, but proceed at your own risk. The scheduling process fills most available seats, so open spots are limited. Follow your advisor’s guidance before making changes.

What if I have no classes scheduled?

This means you did not submit a course request form during your window. You can still add courses during open registration as long as you have no holds on your account. Contact your academic advisor for help building a schedule.

How long do I have to make schedule changes?

Check the add/drop deadline calendars and select your semester.

Open Registration

When your time ticket window opens, register directly through myPurdue. This is also when you can request online courses, cross-location courses and course overrides.

Registration Dates and Time Ticket Windows

Find your term below and select your student type to see when registration opens and what dates apply to you. Published dates reflect when the first window opens — time tickets are released incrementally to prevent system issues.

Time ticket assignment is based on completed/earned credits in myPurdue. Always check your individual time ticket in myPurdue for the most accurate information, as all dates are subject to change.

Please note: All times listed are Eastern Time.

Other registration tasks

Confirm Off-campus Course Location

A Course Experience Location hold is placed when you’re registered in a course that requires an off‑campus experience, such as a field experience, clinical hours, a practicum or an internship.

Reporting mandates require the university to verify the physical location where these experiences take place. If the required information is not submitted within 30 days of the email notice, a registration hold will be placed on your account.

Confirm your course experience location in myPurdue. Select Academics from the top menu to view your Personal Information card where you’ll choose Confirm Course Experience Location. Enter the address where you’ll be physically located while completing the off‑campus course requirements. For example, if you live in Indiana but commute daily to Kentucky for the course experience, you must provide the Kentucky address. If your location changes or your course details change, it’s your responsibility to update this information.

If the information shown is already correct, select Verify.

Confirm Course Experience Location

Prepare Your Course Plan

Once your registration time ticket is open, review your 8‑semester plan in myPurduePlan to identify the courses you need to take. Use this plan as a reference when registering for classes through myPurdue.

After your registration is processed and fees are assessed, you’ll receive a notification to your @Purdue.edu email address.

Review myPurdue Plan

What to Do If Your Class is Canceled

If a class section is canceled, you’ll receive an email from the department offering the course with instructions to move to a non‑canceled section.

We’ll also mark the section as canceled by removing the meeting time and instructor and listing the location as ‘Canceled Class.’ The canceled section will appear this way on your Detailed Student Schedule.

Request a Custom Course Title

You may request a custom course title or confirm its creation directly through myPurdue. If the instructor you need is not listed, contact the Schedule Deputy for that academic department. If you’re unsure who the Schedule Deputy is, visit our Academic Classroom Scheduling page for the appropriate contact.

Required Information

You must provide the following information when submitting a custom title request:

  • Subject (e.g., CHM, PSY, ME)
  • Course number (e.g., 11200, 24400, 36500)
  • Course title (30 characters or fewer, including spaces)
  • Credit hours
  • Instructor name

Guidance on Course Titles

  • Course titles appear on your official academic transcript.
  • The title must briefly describe the subject matter.
  • Don’t use the course subject and number as the course title (e.g., “ENGL 11100”).
  • If no title is provided, a default title will be assigned.

I didn’t get the classes I wanted. What should I do?

Your schedule was built from your course request form, including your alternative choices, based on which courses had open seats and which times worked together. You can make changes during open registration using the Scheduling Assistant tool in myPurdue. Before you drop or swap a class, talk with your academic advisor to make sure the change keeps you on track.

I did not submit my Course Request Form before the deadline and do not have a schedule. What should I do?

You can still register. Add courses during open registration as long as you have no holds on your account. Your academic advisor can help you choose courses and build a schedule, so reach out to them first.

Why was I assigned an online or hybrid section? I want an in-person class.

You may attempt to change into an in-person section once your time ticket opens.

Why don’t I see any classes on my schedule?

This may happen if you didn’t submit a Course Request Form during pre-registration or if a hold prevented schedule creation. Your advisor can help you determine next steps.

Why aren’t my class times what I requested?

Your schedule reflects the best available options based on your requests and alternatives. Consult your advisor before making changes.

Why didn’t I get my high‑priority courses?

You cannot be registered in a course if:

  • The course is already full
  • The course conflicts with another scheduled class
  • You don’t meet a prerequisite or restriction

Why isn’t my dual or transfer credit posted? I need an override.

A department designee must review an official or unofficial transcript before an override can be approved.

Can I import my schedule to my personal calendar?

Yes. First, log in to the scheduling assistant.

You’ll see your class schedule. On the far right, click Export. From the dropdown menu, select Export iCalendar (the last option). A pop‑up window will open. Copy the link shown there.

Apple iOS Calendar

On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings. Tap Calendar → Accounts → Add Account → Other. Tap Add Subscribed Calendar. Paste the iCalendar link you copied. Tap Next, then Save.

Google Calendar

If you use Google Calendar, please go to Google Support: Add someone else’s Google Calendar. Follow the instructions based on your device.

Microsoft Office Outlook

If you use Outlook, please go to Microsoft Office Support: Import or subscribe to a calendar in Outlook on the web. Follow the instructions under the “Subscribe to a calendar” heading.

Post-registration: Your Schedule

We use your course requests and alternatives to build the most workable schedule possible that supports progress toward your degree. The university assumes no responsibility for delays in degree progress caused by registration changes made by the student.

Important to Note

Review Your Schedule

Your course requests and alternatives are used to create the best available schedule. If you didn’t receive requested courses or preferred times, ask your academic advisor before making changes.

If your schedule is empty, you may not have submitted a request during the pre-registration window, or there may be a hold on your account. Contact your academic advisor for next steps. Your time ticket is available in myPurdue on the Academic Profile card, under Registration Notices.

Visit myPurdue

Schedule Changes After Release

If a course appears as not enrolled, you may attempt to reactivate it and rebuild your schedule. A message will confirm whether the attempt was successful.

Schedule changes made through add or drop actions update in real time. You can confirm changes by viewing your schedule in Scheduling Assistant.

Before rearranging your schedule or making changes not previously discussed, consult your academic advisor.

Canceled Class Section

If a class section is canceled, you’ll receive an email from the department offering the course with instructions to move to a non‑canceled section.

We’ll also mark the section as canceled by removing the meeting time and instructor and listing the location as ‘Canceled Class.’ The canceled section will appear this way on your Detailed Student Schedule.

Add/Drop Deadlines

You can make schedule changes during the approved add/drop period for your term.

The timeframe for making schedule changes depends on the term and course.

Refer to the Add/Drop Refund and Deadline Calendar for your semester to learn key dates, authorizations required and impact on fees and tuition.

Review Calendars

Special Situations

  • If dual or transfer credit hasn’t posted and an override is required, a department designee must review an official or unofficial transcript before approving the override. Once approved, you may attempt to register for the course.
  • If you were assigned an online or hybrid course and prefer an in-person option, you may attempt to register for an in-person section once your time ticket opens.
  • If you wish to leave a Learning Community, consult your advisor first. After that discussion, you may contact the Learning Community team at learningcommunities@purdue.edu or (765) 494‑5785.

What does it mean when a course has a red line through it?

It means you were not enrolled in that course.

How do I try to register for a course I wasn’t enrolled in?

Use the recycle icon in Scheduling Assistant to reactivate the course, then select Build Schedule. A message will let you know whether you were enrolled.

Can I rearrange my schedule?

Consult your advisor before making changes that were not previously discussed.

Why does my schedule include overlapping classes?

Some courses allow a limited number of absences (for example, BAND 11000). Confirm expectations directly with the instructor.

Is my schedule updated when I add or drop a course?

Yes. Schedule changes update in real time in Scheduling Assistant.

How long do I have to make schedule changes?

Refer to the add/drop calendars for the term.

What if I want to leave my Learning Community?

After speaking with your advisor, contact the Learning Community team at learningcommunities@purdue.edu or (765) 494‑5785.
