Student Facilitators

Our year-long facilitator program is for students looking to gain or refine their facilitation skills, including active listening and practicing group-centered leadership.

Some tasks and activities facilitators do are:

  • Facilitating Strengths workshops
  • Supporting the Leadership Experience at Purdue (LEAP) program
  • Attending and leading a small group for our overnight retreat: the Emily Mauzy Vogel Sophomore Leadership Development Experience
  • Facilitating workshops and sessions for student organizations and groups

Time commitment: 15 hours per semester*

*Hours may vary depending on facilitator’s involvement.

Learning Outcomes  

As a LEAD Student Facilitator, you will:

  1. Practice facilitation skills including active listening and guided reflection.
  2. Identify way(s) that you can use your personal strengths in the facilitation process.
  3. Strengthen your collaboration skills by partnering with other student facilitators on presentations.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this facilitator position, applicants must:
  • Plan to be a student at Purdue University for a least one whole academic year
    • Example: Fall 2026, Spring 2027, and Fall 2027 
The ideal student facilitator will possess: 
  • A positive attitude, with a disposition to learn.
  • Active listening skills to create comfortable and engaged learning environments for participants.
  • A strong work ethic and time management skills.
  • Ability to work with individuals from different cultural backgrounds and model the LEAD Competencies.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:
  • Attending one mandatory training session in the Fall.
  • Attending one follow-up training session (Skillshare) per semester.
  • Scheduling and attending a 1-on-1 coaching session with a Leadership Development Specialist per semester.
  • Facilitating a minimum of two workshops or sessions per semester.

Student facilitator’s work will include working independently, with co-facilitators, and LEAD Staff

Additional responsibilities will vary based on the focus area the facilitator is assigned to, but the workload is the same (15 hours total).

Ideal for Sophomores and Juniors.

Leadership Development Facilitator activities include:

  • Facilitating at the Emily Mauzy Vogel Sophomore Leadership Development Experience.
  • Leading discussions during The Leadership Experience at Purdue (LEAP).
  • Supporting the Essential Career Skills (ECS) workshop series (various dates).
  • Accepting and conducting workshops requests for student organizations.
  • Assisting with LEAD tabling for outreach events.
  • Other tasks and duties as needed.

Professional Development

Ideal for Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors.

The Professional Development Facilitator activities include:  

  • Facilitating at the Emily Mauzy Vogel Sophomore Leadership Development Experience.
  • Facilitating in-person and/or virtual Strengths workshops.
  • Supporting the Essential Career Skills (ECS) workshop series (various dates).
  • Accepting and conducting workshops requests for student organizations.
  • Assisting with LEAD tabling for outreach events.
  • Other tasks and duties as needed.
