January 2026 Winter Weather Safety
January 23, 2026
Dear Boilermakers,
Your health and safety remain paramount! You may already be aware, but a friendly reminder seems warranted. The National Weather Service has issued both a cold weather advisory and a winter storm warning for our area, West Lafayette and Indianapolis.
Over the next few days, the weather is forecasted to be very cold with wind chills as low as 20 below zero. These conditions can be very dangerous and frostbite on exposed skin can occur in as little as 30 minutes. With prolonged exposure, hypothermia can set in quickly.
For your safety and that of our fellow Boilermakers, I urge you to take all necessary precautions:
- Stay indoors as much as possible to limit your exposure.
- If you must be outside, wear appropriate clothing, layers are recommended.
- Travel in groups/always have a buddy.
- Keep your cellphone charged and your ID with you.
- If possible, refrain from travel this weekend as conditions across the country will be impacted. Check road conditions prior to travel.
- Make the call! Call 911 if you need police, fire or emergency medical services.
- See this link for more Winter Storms/Extreme Cold terms, resources and safety tips.
Important Purdue Alert/safety status information:
- Our up-to-date campus safety status is always on the Campus Safety Status
- For notifications, the PurdueALERT system encompasses everything from emails and desktop alerts to outdoor warning sirens. Please take a moment to ensure that you are signed up to receive emergency text alerts directly on your phone.
- In an extreme situation, the Purdue.edu homepage will host the most needed information, and @LifeAtPurdue Twitter/X account will broadcast clear information.
Our top priority is you, our students. Please help keep our community safe by taking steps to ensure your safety and the safety of your fellow Boilermakers.
Boiler Up! Hammer Down! Hail Purdue and each of you!
