Department Head, Linda Prokopy, traveled to Chicago this week with April Shepherd from Ag Development. Highlights of the trip included visiting with Ball Horticulture’s 3 Purdue interns (including Ian Kelly, a HORT major, and Kayla Grennes, an undergraduate researcher in Dr. Ying Li’s lab) and visiting with Distinguished Ag Alum, Dr. Marvin Miller.


Purdue Department of Agriculture released a story about the continuing collaboration between the Purdue Student Farm and the Native American Educational Cultural Center (NAECC) on the Three Sisters Garden. This week Dr. Kathryn Orvis and Vicki Stirm hosted sessions for the 4-H Round Up. There were fourteen students (from various counties in Indiana), two chaperones, and one Youth Ambassador. The session was titled “Inside Out Plants,” which included a scavenger hunt in the Jules Janick Horticulture Garden, followed by flower dissections in the classroom.


Petrus Langenhoven and visiting scholar Dennis Gustavo Toc Mo presented a Soil Health and Pepper Production research update at the Southwest Purdue Agricultural Center on June 28, 2023. We discussed the impact of soil management practices on soil health and talked about what we have learned so far in the ongoing 4-year USDA-funded Soil to Market grant.



Lori Hoagland and colleagues Daniel-Leon Salas (Purdue Polytechnic), Tali Zohar and Jozsef Kadar (Arava Institute for Environmental Studies) received funding from the BARD US-Israel Binational Agricultural Research and Development Fund to host a workshop this coming October in Israel titled ‘Food Security and the Nexus to Water-Energy in the Face of Climate Change’. The International Food and Agribusiness Management Association conference in Christchurch, New Zealand (June 17-22) facilitated a powerful connection between industry and academia, driving innovation and sustainability in the food and agribusiness sector. The Horticulture and Landscape Architecture Weed Science team attended and presented at the Southwest Purdue Ag Center Field Day held on June 28. Emmanuel Cooper talked about organic sweetpotato and Jeanine Arana talked about plasticulture strawberry production.


Jean Zavala, a member of Dr. Torres’s Lab, recently gave a talk on business analysis and financial plans for small business planning and entrepreneurs.
